UNIVERSITY OF JAFFNA
The University of Jaffna is located at Puliyadi Lane in Jaffna. It is a public University in the city of Jaffna and was established in 1974 as the sixth campus of the University of Sri Lanka. Late it became an independent and autonomous University bearing the name University of Jaffna on 1st January 1979.
It has nine faculties, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business Studies, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Science.
The Coat of Arms of the University of Jaffna has the emblem of the Bull (Nandi) and the traditional oil lamp at the centre on a round shield. The traditional oil lamp symbolises the light of wisdom and the centre emblem is surrounded by sixty four flames depicting the sixty four varieties of arts that adorns the Tamil culture. The Motto “மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு” (“Meypporul Kaanpathu Arivu” – in English Discernment is wisdom).
