Peace Message
Sunday 1 July 2012
Arya Cakravarti Dynasty
The three decade war is over in Sri Lanka. We must build lasting peace.
People lost their homes, loved ones and their dreams. To re-establish their livelihoods, we must commit ourselves sincerely to continuing rehabilitation, reconstruction and redevelopment of the affected people and affected areas. Although 95% of the displaced civilians and combatants have been resettled, we must continue to improve the quality of their lives. This is the immediate challenge.
Lasting peace cannot be achieved through violence or confrontational politics. This is the single most important message of post-Independent Sri Lanka. Everlasting peace can only be achieved through a process of genuine consultation, understanding, and consensus. If we work together, I am sure we can achieve this goal. I appeal to all Sri Lankans living in the country and overseas to work for this greater ideal. We owe this to a generation that sacrificed and to our future generations.
The greatest heritage we inherited from our forefathers was harmony. Sri Lanka was a shining example and model of ethnic and religious harmony for the rest of the world. Unfortunately, Sri Lankans of our generation failed to maintain this precious gift from our ancestors. When ethnicity and religion was politicized by politicians in the north and the south, we started to fight each other. Unfortunately, some are still trying to disturb the hard earned peace. Every human being on the planet has the right to live in peace. This is the most basic human right.
It is my sincere wish that all Sri Lankans should come forward to build a harmonious Sri Lanka. It is also a unique opportunity for our nation to serve as an example to the world, especially in times of global political, economic and social turmoil. In order to achieve peace and unity in our country, we must, irrespective of our ethnic, social or political differences, join hands together and restore our common heritage - a harmonious living
Do not fear change. If you change your thoughts, you change your life. The fastest way to achieve peace is to change your thinking. Some may think peace is difficult. Everlasting peace can only be built by letting go of our prejudices and working together as children of mother Lanka.
I wish all the people of Sri Lanka and around the world a peaceful future.
