Peace Message to mark 500 years (1505 - 2005)
Friday 11 February 2005
I bring this message to mark 500 years of the invasion of the Portuguese-the first European power beginning in the year 1505, to Sri Lanka. Although the kingdom of Jaffna ended on 11th February 1621, it still exists through me and other Descendants of the Royal Family of Jaffna.
After many years of war in Sri Lanka the time is ripe for us to become united in bringing peace and harmony among our fellow country men. Sri Lanka is a country of great historical importance and we need to maintain this importance by sustaining our culture and rising above our differences.
I appeal as a non political and neutral person to all the leaders of the country to come together in agreement and bring peace to our country. As we are all aware, our country has befallen a tragedy by the Tsunami Earthquake. It brings an awareness that we must work together as one nation.
The Norwegian Government has been extremely kind in coming forward to make us aware of our country’s needs and how important it is that we join hands in becoming a nation united. I can understand if we were two different countries fighting a war, but we are people of the same country. We should be united in making it a better place instead of a war zone. The Government is trying to bring disaster management including distribution of International Aid. But there is still impartiality towards the Tamil region which will result in the Tamil people being left out of the International Aid Programme.
The Government needs to divide International Aid equally and not show partiality. At a time of great loss we need to come together. The impact of the Tsunami has effected several locations of South East Asian region but the North East coast of the Island has also suffered two decades of war and struggle for peace. There are individuals in the region coming together and lending a helping hand to restore the island. The disaster has made the Tamil people around the world aware of their nation’s need and they have come together to help rebuild their land. I look forward that the leaders of our country come together and make amicable decisions in helping the people of the North East of Sri Lanka.
I thank you all for acknowledging my work for my people through the International Media. I want to point out that I am not asking to rule or to take advantage of the people but to make known that I am here to serve my country and its people. At the same time I do not wish to forget my historical heritage. Many countries were at war with each other but they were able to rise above their differences and make peace. So we the people of Sri Lanka need to do likewise. Unity is strength and the only way to build our country. So lets join hands and help to save our history and heritage, also to create a bright and durable future. One to look forward to with UNITY, PEACE, and LOYALTY. My best wishes to the people of Sri Lanka.
11th February 2005.
