Letter sent to The Secretary General of the United Nation

His Excellency Kofi Annan,
Secretary General of the United Nations
United Nations Secretariat
United Nations S-378
New York, NY 10017
United States of America

Your Excellency,

I am writing to you in the capacity of the Head of the Royal House of Jaffna. Being the Head of the Royal House of Jaffna, it is my duty to assist and support the people of Sri Lanka.

My compatriots and I are greatly concerned about the increasing violations of human rights conditions in Sri Lanka. It is unfortunate that for over 20 years we have not had peace. Although some things have improved over the last few years, we still have not been able to achieve any short commitment towards peace and unity.

I am taking this step to kindly remind Your Excellency of  the difficult political situation on the island. Over the years, it has become more and more unstable. Although both parties committed to a Cease Fire Agreement sign in 2002. I would like to convey my deepest concern about the recent escalating violence and civilian frustration.

It has come to my notice that several minor social groups are involved in judicial killings, and people are still under threat for their lives. Even the presence of international monitoring groups does not seem to make much of a difference to them.

It is a great concern that my country suffers such mishaps. I am aware that the Norwegian peace envoys held several meetings in the last few years with the Tamil leader and with the Sri Lankan authorities; promises were made, but unfortunately no serious action has been taken to fulfill them.

The People of the North and East have severely suffered by the decade of the war and our trust in resolving it is in the hands of the international community and especially the facilitators of the process.

I would like to request Your Excellency to apply some measure of pressure on both parties to reinitiate face to face talks to improve the situation for the people of Sri Lanka and reduce the violence and destruction all possibilities of a peaceful solution.

As we are all aware, human rights and fundamental freedom are the sacred basic purposes of the Charter of United Nations-thus I urgently request Your Excellency's kind intervention to apply some measure of pressure as possible on the Sri Lankan authorities to end such practices.

I request you to kindly give us your guidance in trying to achieve peace in Sri Lanka. I anticipate a positive reply.

Yours sincerely,

Sgnd/. Remigius Kanagarajah of Jaffna
